Mandalas for Meditation and Self-Expression
Join us for an experiential workshop on creating mandalas as a meditation practice.
‘Mandala’ is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning ‘circle’, and artwork in the form of a mandala appears in many traditions. Some locals may be familiar with the annual visit of Buddhist monks to the Hampton Arts center, where they create a large, intricate mandala out of colored sand over the course of a week, only to sweep it away when they are finished as a reminder of the impermanence of things. Taking a different form, in the Christian tradition, mandalas appear in the rose windows of medieval cathedrals. Carl Jung, the “father of modern psychotherapy,” viewed the mandala as an archetype of wholeness and theorized that working with mandalas could assist in enhancing psychological harmony and an integrated sense of self.
For our purposes, we hope that making mandalas will be a playful, creative way to practice mindfulness, promote inner peace, and reduce stress. All art supplies will be provided, and no previous artistic or meditation experience is required.
